You are required to submit a move-in notification to the municipal office of your residence within 14 days of your arrival in Japan. Show your Residence Card issued at a point of entry and your passport at your local municipal office's resident registration department and fill in the necessary forms. After this procedure is completed, make a request to get a photo copy of your “Certificate of Residence.” Be sure to carry your Residence Card with you at all times. Please bring a photocopy of your “Certificate of Residence” to the International Affairs Office.
In case of any changes in the address, name, nationality, residence status, permitted period of stay, etc., you are required to inform relevant institutions within 14 days of the changes. If there are any changes in the name, gender, date of birth, nationality, institution that you belong to, please report such changes to the Tokyo Regional Immigration Services Bureau. When changing your address or returning to your home country after completing your study program, notify the municipal office of your residence (or, if you move out, please notify a municipal office at the new location) . Also, inform the International Affairs Division of changes, too.
Foreign nationals residing in Japan for more than one year are required by law to enroll in the National Health Insurance, just like Japanese citizens. When visiting a doctor’s office for treatment of illness or injury, the insurance covers 70% of the cost of medical care and medicine (subject to the scope of coverage by the National Health Insurance). Regardless of your estimated period of stay in Japan, all international students at Ochanomizu University must enroll in the National Health Insurance.
How to enroll: Show your Residence Card at a municipal office of your residence and follow the procedure. The premium rate varies more or less between municipalities and according to your status (e.g., whether you are married or not). For details, contact the municipal office of your residence. After the procedure for the National Health Insurance is completed, please bring your health insurance card to the International Affairs Office.
Japan Study Support: National Health Insurance
All people aged 20 or older (including international students) residing in Japan are obliged to enroll in the National Pension System. Follow the procedure for the enrollment at the municipal office of your residence, presenting your Residence Card and your student ID card. There is an exemption/deferral scheme available for those who have difficulties paying the premiums for some reason. If you want to apply for the scheme, please ask the municipal office for details.
You are required to open a bank account if your status as an international student falls under any of the following.

The name stamp used for your bank account should not be a so-called Shachi-hata self-inking stamp). Please purchase a stamp of your name at a stamp specialty shop or stationery store.
Ochanomizu University has a system for waiving all or half of admission fee and/or tuition, or postponing the collection of admission fee and/or tuition, for regular students (graduate students only) who have financial difficulty paying their admission fee and/or tuition due to exceptional circumstances and who are recognized as producing excellent academic results. To apply for this system, submit an application during the designated period to the Student and Career Support Office. For details, refer to the link below.
Exemption From Admission Fee and/or Tuition Exemption/Reduction/Deferral Schemes (J)
Orientations are held in early April and early October every year, in which faculty staff members explain the following things. Be sure to attend the orientation, as it will provide information valuable to your life as an international student.
International students can take the following Japanese language classes; all of these classes are offered for free.
